WhatsApp Groups API for Business: Features, Limits & Use Cases
WhatsApp group is a great feature for WhatsApp users to communicate within a selected audience group. Starting from October 6, WhatsApp Group Cloud API is officially launched on WOZTELL, powered by Sanuker. Businesses can now automate group creation, member management, and compliant group chats designed for collaboration, customer service, and multi-party case resolution.
From automating group creation to syncing data via webhooks, WhatsApp Cloud API Groups let your business handle teamwork and customer engagement directly on WhatsApp — all while staying organized and audit-ready.
What is WhatsApp Group API?
WhatsApp Groups API, part of the WhatsApp Cloud API, gives businesses new ways to start and manage group conversations with multiple participants under one thread. It lets you automate group creation, manage members, send interactive messages, and connect events to your CRM through WhatsApp Groups API webhooks.
Benefits for businesses
- Deepen relationships with customers in longer sales cycles and get your team together to support them
- Share important information with a group of customers
- Manage employee-client conversations to provide compliant and continuous service
Businesses in industries like wealth management, education, e-commerce, and real estate are already using it to enhance productivity and improve service coordination.

WhatsApp Groups API vs WhatsApp App: What’s the Difference?
While regular WhatsApp groups (on the personal or business app) allow you to chat, share links, and manage participants manually, the WhatsApp Cloud API Groups bring automation, integration, and scalability to your operations.
What stays the same in any WhatsApp group (App or API-managed)?
You still get the familiar basics: you can create a group, share an invite link so people join themselves, remove members who go off-topic, and send texts, images, and videos to everyone in the room. You can also close the loop by deleting a group once it has served its purpose. These are the “as-always” features, the API doesn’t change how they feel for end users.
What gets better when you integrate with the WhatsApp Cloud API?
With Groups on Cloud API, teams can run groups like tiny, governed “work rooms”: create or archive groups automatically from your workflows (ticket opened → group created; job closed → group archived), distribute join links via a bot at the exact step of a flow, send interactive messages (buttons/lists) instead of long text, and trigger webhooks so join/leave/messages sync to your CRM.
In short: the same group chat, but operational, auditable, and connected to your systems.
Regular app groups vs. Groups on Cloud API
| Feature | Regular WhatsApp group (Personal/Business App) | Groups on WhatsApp Cloud API (via WOZTELL) |
|---|---|---|
| Create group | Manual only (in the app) | Manual or automated from your workflows (e.g., ticket/job opens → group created) |
| Delete/close group | Manual delete/exit | Programmatic archive/close when work finishes |
| Add members | Admins can add members in-app; invite links supported | No direct add via API. Share an invite link (manually or by bot/flow) so users join themselves |
| Max participants | Up to 1,024 | Up to 8 |
| Interactive messages | Not available beyond simple polls | Available: buttons, lists, products; AI chatbots, integration and automation support |
| 24-hour window behavior | Not available | In groups, any member’s message refreshes the window for the whole group |
| Webhooks / data sync | Not available | Available: receive join/leave/message events; sync to CRM |
How the 24-Hour Window Works in WhatsApp Groups
In groups, when any member sends a message, the 24-hour session window for the whole group refreshes, letting you send free form, utility, or marketing messages without charging a fee while that window is open. Outside the window, you’ll need a template to re-open engagement and the messages will be billable.
Tip: Leverage the session window. If your community is talkative, many of your messages will fall within the refreshed 24-hour window (i.e., free session).
Understanding WhatsApp Groups API Templates and Billing
For billable messages (e.g., a marketing template sent to a group outside of the 24-hour window), you’re charged per delivered recipient at the destination country’s rate (e.g., message from Hong Kong to a Singapore number follows the Singapore rate). If there are 5 members in the group, and a message delivers to 4 of 5 members, you are charged for 4.
Current limits
- Participants per group: up to 8
- Collective calls are not allowed
- Groups per business number: up to 10,000
What can you do with Groups on Cloud API?
Multi-party case resolution
For complex scenarios like warranty claims, insurance purchases, or customer support issues, create a small group with the customer, 1–2 support agents, department, the vendor, and the installer so everyone aligns in one auditable thread.
The flow is simple: spin up a case-named group when the ticket opens, gather evidence (photos or videos), agree on the fix and schedule, then close with a one-tap customer satisfaction check.
VIP and Community Groups
Invite 5–7 top buyers into a short-cycle perks group (e.g., “VIP Drop · October”). Share early looks, size holds, and last-call alerts. Automate scheduled drop reminders and one-tap feedback after each drop. Measure redemption rate and revenue per member.
Tuition/tutorial cell (fixed time slot)
Form a group for a tutor and 5–7 learners by level or schedule (e.g., “IELTS Sat 10am”). Post materials, homework, and reminders; use interactive lists for quiz links. Automate a lesson-start ping, attendance prompts, and an end-of-month progress survey. Measure attendance, completion, and satisfaction.
Residency/tenant move-in pod
For an homestay host or property manager, group 5–8 new tenants for weekly handovers to handle utilities setup, key collection, and house rules. Automate a move-in checklist, meter-reading photo prompts, and quick-reply maintenance requests. Measure move-in satisfaction and first-week ticket volume.
Key Steps to Kickstart Group API
- Business Account & Registration: Register your business and obtain a valid phone number for the API.
- Choose an API Provider: Work with WhatsApp Business Platform API provider, Sanuker, to handle the connection and provide group management functions.
- Obtain API Credentials: Generate an API key or access token to authenticate your requests.
- Create or Find a Group: Use the API to create a new group by providing a name and initial participants, or use an existing group ID to send messages or add members.
- Manage Group Features: Utilize the API to retrieve group details, add or remove members, and send messages to the group.
What you can do now
