This guide starts with that bigger picture, then works up from what Meta Business Agent is to how you run it — connected to your systems and coexisting with your team — with WOZTELL Sanuker.
A new agentic era — and why October is the turning point
For a decade, automating a conversation meant scripting it: menus, keyword triggers, decision trees. The customer bent to the software. That era is ending. AI agents flip the model — the customer just talks, and the agent understands, reasons, pulls live data, and drives toward an outcome. This is the agentic shift, and it’s moving fast from novelty to default. Messaging is where it lands first, because that’s where billions of customer conversations already happen every day.
Meta is not watching this from the sidelines — it’s making one of its biggest bets on it. Read the second half of 2026 as a single, deliberate move and the strategy is unmistakable. It’s a pincer.
On one side, Meta changed the economics of the channel. From October 1, 2026, service messages inside the 24-hour customer-service window stop being free — replying to a customer now carries a cost, whether a human or an AI sends it.
On the other side, Meta made its own agent the cheapest way to respond. Meta Business Agent replies are billed per token as a single bundled charge, and crucially there’s no double-charge — a message handled by the agent isn’t also charged as a service message.
Put those together and the message to millions of businesses is clear: responding by hand is now a cost line, and the native AI agent is the efficient answer Meta is steering you toward. This isn’t a pricing tweak. It’s Meta using its pricing calendar to accelerate the agentic era on its own platforms — and pull the whole ecosystem along with it. The rest of this guide is about how to ride that wave on your terms instead of being pushed by it: keeping control, your data, and your business features, while getting the agent’s upside.
What is Meta Business Agent?
Meta Business Agent is a new category of message on Meta’s platforms: an AI agent, built and run by Meta, that responds inside the existing chat thread with no app switch for the customer. It engages customers by answering questions, requesting information, recommending products, and driving sales and support conversations. It learns from your own business content — profile, catalog, FAQs, website — not the open internet.
Two things share the name, and the difference decides everything about what you can do with it:
The self-serve agent lives inside the WhatsApp Business app (and, for Messenger, inside Meta Business Suite). You switch it on in minutes, no code. It’s genuinely easy — and, as we’ll see, genuinely limited.
The Meta Business Agent Platform is the API-based, enterprise product. It runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) — including through a Business Solution Provider like WOZTELL Sanuker — and is where the agent connects to your CRM, inventory, booking, and payment systems. It is not available through the standard WhatsApp Business app.
The self-serve agent answers questions. The Platform agent runs the shop — connected to your systems, your inbox, and your data.
How does Meta Business Agent work?
When a customer messages your business, WhatsApp routes the message to the agent, which reads the context, generates a response from your knowledge base and connected systems, and replies inside the thread. When the conversation needs a person, it hands off to your team.
On the Platform, this runs on a primary-responder / standby model that matters for anyone building a serious setup. The agent is the primary responder and answers directly. Your app — your inbox, your automation — sits in standby: it still receives the customer’s messages, copies of what the agent sends, and delivery and read receipts, so it stays in sync. A customer’s message arrives on the standby webhook when the agent holds control, and on the messages webhook when your app holds control; a messaging_handovers webhook fires whenever control changes.
To respond, your app takes control simply by sending a message to the thread. To hand control back so the agent resumes, your app calls Thread Control with the release action. (A pass action is reserved for future use — today, release is the supported path.) This is exactly the coexistence layer: the native agent and your human team share one thread, cleanly.
What can Meta Business Agent do?
Configured through the Platform, the agent is far more than an FAQ bot. Across the customer journey it can answer questions, recommend products, give tailored comparisons, book appointments, qualify leads, complete purchases in-thread, take payments, look up orders, and act on your systems through connected APIs — then hand off to your team.
Under the hood, these are the building blocks you configure:
- Knowledge. Structured business info (hours, locations, policies, payment methods, returns, shipping), question-and-answer FAQs, website crawling, and uploaded files up to 100 MB (PDF, DOC, DOCX, images, and spreadsheets).
- Skills. Named instruction sets that shape how the agent responds — its priorities, tone, and how it handles specific tasks.
- Rich messages (UI Skills). The agent doesn’t only send text. It can send carousels, call-to-action buttons, WhatsApp Flows, images, interactive lists, and location — native WhatsApp components, not plain paragraphs.
- Connectors. The agent calls your external systems — CRM, inventory, booking — through your own APIs, secured with OAuth 2.0, API keys, or mutual TLS. This is the difference between an agent that talks about your business and one that acts on it.
- Proactive events, controlled rollout, and measurement. Agent Events let you trigger the agent from a business event (a completed purchase, a verified document). An allowlist limits the agent to a set of numbers for a controlled launch. A test endpoint lets you try the agent without a live customer. An evaluation engine scores conversations with an LLM judge, surfaces failure categories, and tells you what to fix before you scale.
How much does Meta Business Agent cost?
Meta Business Agent is billed per token: $2.00 per 1 million tokens, roughly 4–5 cents per message, as a single charge that covers both the AI processing and the message delivery. A typical message uses 20,000–25,000 tokens; a simple answer costs less than a rich, multi-turn resolution. Token billing began on August 1, 2026, after a free build-and-test window that ran July 1–31.
For your budget, the key point is that there is no double-charge: each message falls into exactly one bucket — either the per-token Meta Business Agent charge, or the per-message service charge, never both.
This is the second half of the pincer from the start of this guide: from October 1, 2026, service messages inside the 24-hour window stop being free, so the per-token agent becomes the efficient path by design. Who can use it — availability and eligibility
The Meta Business Agent Platform has been available since July 1, 2026 through the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), including via a BSP or Embedded Signup. It is not available through the standard WhatsApp Business app.
Eligibility is decided per phone number, and the Eligibility check is deliberately binary — it returns eligible or not eligible, and nothing about why. A number qualifies when its WhatsApp Business Account is:
- In a supported vertical. The agent is available in all verticals except seven: Finance, Government, Health, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs, and matrimony services. A valid business category must be set on the profile.
- Properly set up and in good standing. Managed through the Cloud API, not restricted or banned, in an authorized country, meeting business trust and verification requirements, and not already running a conflicting messaging product on that number — one number, one product.
Because the check is a plain yes/no, a “not eligible” result doesn’t tell you whether it’s the country, the vertical, the language, or account status. In practice, for any market you’re unsure about — Hong Kong and Cantonese support are a known example — the only reliable answer is to run the Eligibility check against the real number. Any “list of available countries” is guesswork; Meta doesn’t publish one. WOZTELL Sanuker runs that check for you before anyone promises a go-live date.
Meta Business Agent in the WhatsApp Business app — and what it costs you
The app version is the front door. You set it up under Tools → AI Agent, authenticate, and confirm; the agent learns from your past chats, website, and catalog, and starts replying. No code, up and running in minutes, multi-language, with audience controls (everyone, new customers, or people coming from ads) and manual human handoff. For a solo owner, it’s a real upgrade over answering every message by hand.
But switching it on inside the app comes with trade-offs that Meta itself documents, and they hit exactly the features a growing business relies on:
- You can lose core WhatsApp features. Activating the agent in the app can disable broadcast lists, disappearing messages, and greeting and away messages.
- You lose multi-device. Turning it on disconnects all linked devices, and you can’t relink WhatsApp for Windows, Android tablets, or WearOS — so a team can’t work the same number from their own screens.
- It doesn’t touch your systems. The app agent learns from your content, but it has no path to your CRM, inventory, or booking — no connectors.
- It’s gated. It runs in select markets with a waitlist, and the language is fixed by your phone number.
That’s the honest picture: easy, but shallow, and it quietly removes the broadcast and multi-device capabilities that make WhatsApp a business channel rather than a personal one.
Coexistence — keep the agent, keep your business features
Here’s the important part, and it’s why the app-versus-Platform choice isn’t really a choice. You don’t have to trade the AI agent for your broadcast lists, your team inbox, or your integrations. Through the Platform — run by a BSP like WOZTELL Sanuker — the Meta Business Agent coexists with everything else on your number.
The primary-responder / standby model is what makes this work: the agent handles the front line, your team steps in from a real shared inbox by sending a message, and control passes back cleanly when they’re done. Broadcast and outbound campaigns keep running. Multiple agents work the same number from their own screens. And the agent can actually do things, because it’s connected to your systems.
So the decision isn’t “native agent or my business tools.” It’s “the native agent plus everything the app version takes away.” That’s coexistence, and it’s the reason to run MBA on the Platform rather than settle for the app.
Configure Meta Business Agent from WOZTELL
You don’t have to wrestle the API to get the Platform version. WOZTELL exposes the whole Meta Business Agent setup inside Channels → Business AI Agent, as a configuration surface — so you get the depth of the Platform with the ease of the app.
From that one screen you can:
- Turn the agent on and choose its audience — respond to everyone, or to an allowlist only for a controlled rollout.
- Route handoffs to a real inbox. Enable human handoff with your own message; when the AI can’t help or the customer asks for a person, the thread lands in the WOZTELL Inbox where your team takes over.
- Keep conversations moving. Set a follow-up nudge after a chosen period of inactivity, from 5 minutes to 24 hours.
- Give the agent its knowledge. Add your business description, payment, returns, purchase and shipping info, contact details and hours; add FAQ pairs; upload knowledge files; and add website URLs for Meta to crawl.
- Shape behavior and connect your stack. Define skills that tell the agent how to handle specific tasks, and — the part the app can never do — configure connectors so the agent can call your CRM, inventory, or booking systems.
- Test and evaluate. Send a test message and run evaluation jobs against your test cases before you go live.
That’s the leap: the app gives you an agent that answers; WOZTELL gives you an agent that’s connected to your business and coexists with your inbox and campaigns.
Meta Business Agent vs a chatbot you own
They’re built for different needs. One is a feature inside Meta’s apps; the other is infrastructure you own and control.
The native agent is fastest to reach customers, lives inside WhatsApp with no app switch, and — on the Platform — integrates with your systems. A chatbot you own runs on your platform, connects to your full stack, keeps data where you choose (including on-premise), and does full outbound and campaigns. For most businesses the strongest setup is not one or the other but both: the native agent for native, in-thread reach, and an owned, orchestrated layer for integration, governance, outbound, and control. Running MBA through WOZTELL Sanuker is how those two become one system instead of two silos.
What Meta Business Agent can’t do (the limits)
An honest guide names the limits.
- The self-serve app version doesn’t integrate — no CRM, ERP, or e-commerce without the Platform — and it can cost you broadcast lists and multi-device, as above.
- Your conversation data lives inside Meta’s ecosystem, which is a governance consideration for regulated industries that need to control where their data sits and how it’s processed.
- It’s built for structured business use, not every vertical — seven categories are excluded outright.
- Control has edges today — the pass action isn’t live yet, and a number can run only one messaging product at a time.
This is where WOZTELL Sanuker fits: custom integrations to connect the agent to your stack, on-premise and single-tenant options for regulated industries, omnichannel orchestration beyond Meta’s apps, full outbound, and model choice — going beyond what the native agent does alone.
How to get started
For the app version, open the WhatsApp Business app, go to Tools → AI Agent, and follow the steps. It’s the quickest way to see an agent reply.
For the Platform version — the one connected to your systems — the path runs through WhatsApp Manager (where your client accepts the Meta Business Agent Terms of Service) and the Cloud API, with a BSP that has accepted the Tech Provider Terms. WOZTELL Sanuker handles that end to end: eligibility checks, onboarding, knowledge, skills, connectors to your systems, testing, and launch — configured from the WOZTELL Channels screen rather than raw API calls.
The agentic era is arriving whether or not you’re ready for it, the businesses that win will be the ones that adopt it on their own terms. Don’t settle for the app version and lose your broadcast lists and team inbox. Talk to WOZTELL Sanuker, we run the eligibility check, configure your agent from WOZTELL with your systems connected, and set up coexistence so the AI and your team share one thread. Frequently asked questions
Is Meta Business Agent the same as “WhatsApp AI”? It’s Meta’s native business agent across WhatsApp, Messenger, and ads — the AI that answers your customers in your brand’s voice, distinct from Meta’s consumer AI assistant.
Does it work in the WhatsApp Business app? Yes — there’s a self-serve version in the app (Tools → AI Agent). But it can disable broadcast lists, greeting/away messages, and multi-device, and it can’t connect to your systems. The Platform version, run through WOZTELL Sanuker, avoids those trade-offs.
Will I lose my broadcast lists if I turn it on? In the app version, you can. On the Platform through WOZTELL, the agent coexists with broadcast and your team inbox, so you keep them.
Can I have the agent and my team inbox at the same time? Yes — that’s the primary-responder / standby model. The agent handles the front line and your team steps in from the WOZTELL Inbox, with control passing back cleanly.
Can the agent connect to my CRM? Not in the app version. On the Platform you configure connectors (secured with OAuth 2.0, API keys, or mTLS) so the agent can call your CRM, inventory, or booking systems — set up from WOZTELL’s Channels screen.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API? For the connected, coexisting version, yes — it runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), not the free app.
Is it available in my country? Eligibility is per number and Meta doesn’t publish a country list. WOZTELL Sanuker runs the eligibility check against your real number before committing to a timeline.
