by | Oct 23, 2021

The Messenger API for Instagram is now open to ALL developers who want to start building on the platform. For business accounts, the API is being rolled out. Phase 1 of the global rollout started in June, which enabled Instagram Businesses between 10K and 100K followers to use their apps to manage DMs at scale. Now, as of August, all Instagram business accounts can connect to the Messenger API for Instagram! However, it should be kept in mind that non-business accounts and group threads are not supported by the API.

Great News to Businesses! Start Conversation with Customers Now!

With Messenger API for Instagram, businesses can engage brand-lovers and outreach to potential customers with messaging-powered campaigns, (e.g. promo code and welcome offer) to start conversation and drive awareness.

Businesses can also:

  • Send and receive messages (text, stories, media) from Instagram users
  • Retrieve conversation history from Instagram business inboxes
  • Respond to public comments with private messages
  • Integrate with existing tools and databases, providing a holistic view of customer interaction.

BUT! A Few Things to Note Before Taking Off

As the Instagram Messaging API is built on the Facebook Graph API, it is similar to the Messenger Platform and requires compliance with all applicable Facebook terms and policies. There are also further technical requirements that must be complied with, including not downloading or retaining any media content sent by any user via the API, and ensuring the business’ messaging experience has an escalation path to a human agent.
