Many businesses have a well-known landline number printed on their storefront, business cards, and invoices. When they start exploring WhatsApp Business, the first question is almost always the same: do I need a new number?
The answer is no. Landline numbers are officially supported by the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API). You can register your existing number and start messaging customers from the number they already know, without giving up your landline for regular calls.
What Meta officially says
According to Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform documentation (last updated February 2026), eligible phone numbers must be:
- Owned by your business
- Include a country and area code (short codes are not supported)
- Able to receive voice calls or SMS
Landlines are explicitly listed as supported, with voice call verification rated as the standard verification method.
What changes after registration (and what doesn’t)
After connecting your landline to the WhatsApp Business Platform, here is exactly what Meta’s documentation says will and won’t change:
What stays the same:
- Your number works normally for regular phone calls and text messages.
- Customers can WhatsApp your number using the contact they already have saved.
What changes:
- The number can no longer be used with the WhatsApp Messenger consumer app.
- If the number is already on the WhatsApp Business App, you do not necessarily need to delete it. Since May 2025, Meta supports WhatsApp Coexistence, which lets you connect your existing WhatsApp Business App number to the Cloud API without losing your chat history or disconnecting from the app.
- Note that Coexistence works via Meta’s Embedded Signup flow through a verified BSP (like Sanuker), and availability may vary depending on your BSP.
- Some features like disappearing messages, broadcast lists, and group chats are not fully synchronised between the app and API under Coexistence.
One thing to check: do you have an IVR?
Some business landlines sit behind an IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system — the “press 1 for sales, press 2 for support” menu. WhatsApp’s registration call cannot navigate an IVR.
If your number is behind an IVR, the fix is straightforward and is documented directly by Meta:
- WhatsApp shares the specific phone numbers that WhatsApp’s registration call will come from.
- You create an allowlist for those numbers in your phone system.
- When the call arrives, it routes directly to a person or voicemail — bypassing the IVR menu — so someone can hear and capture the 6-digit verification code.
What you unlock with the WhatsApp Business Platform
Once your landline is connected through WOZTELL, you are on the full WhatsApp Cloud API. The difference in capability is significant:
- Shared team inbox: multiple agents handle conversations from your single business number simultaneously
- Automation and chatbots: handle FAQs, qualify leads, and route conversations around the clock without manual intervention
- Broadcast campaigns: send approved message templates to opted-in contacts at scale
- CRM integration: sync every WhatsApp conversation into your existing CRM, helpdesk, or sales tools
- WhatsApp Cloud Calling: agents can switch from text chat to a voice call within the same conversation thread, with no redialling and no platform switching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use a landline number on the WhatsApp Business Platform?
Yes. According to Meta’s official documentation, landline numbers (categorised as “Fixed line”) are explicitly supported on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Verification is done via voice call rather than SMS.
What happens to regular phone calls after registering a landline on WhatsApp?
Nothing changes. Meta states that registered numbers can still be used for everyday purposes such as calling and text messages. Only use with the WhatsApp Messenger consumer app is blocked.
Can I register a landline that has an IVR system on WhatsApp Business Platform?
Yes, but you need to configure it first. WhatsApp provides the phone numbers the WhatsApp registration call will come from. You allowlist those numbers and route the call to a real person or voicemail to capture the 6-digit verification code.
Do extension numbers work with WhatsApp Business Platform?
No. Meta requires a full phone number with country code and area code. Extension-only numbers are not supported.
